Heart healthy exercises – Part 1 – interval training

The day after Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to talk about healthy exercises for your heart. There are many ways to keep your heart healthy. My favorite helps you improve your fitness level, lower your chances of heart disease and lose weight. It’s called interval training!

What is interval training?? It’s pretty simple! Interval training combines short bursts of high-intensity exercise with slightly longer periods of active rest. If walking is your exercise of choice, walk at your normal pace for two minutes, then walk at an above average pace for 1 minute, repeat. If you jog, every third minute try to jog a little faster. Weight training is already a form of interval training. Our heart rate increases when we’re doing our reps, then comes down while we rest between sets.

Continuously raising and lowering your heart rate improves vascular function, burns calories and makes the body more efficient at clearing fat and sugar from your blood.
Most importantly, find exercise that you enjoy. When you do, raise your heart rate, let it come down, then raise it up again and repeat for the duration of your workout. You heart will be happier for it!
